The guardrails that actually matter for customer-facing AI

Guardrails that matter

“Put an AI on our WhatsApp” is easy. “Put an AI in front of paying customers and sleep at night” is the real task. The gap between those two is guardrails, and only a few of them actually matter.

1. Answers from your facts

The agent should answer from your knowledge base (policies, prices, schedules), not from guesses. When it doesn’t know, the right move is to hand the chat to a person, not to invent a refund you never offered.

2. A human one tap away

Anything high-stakes runs past a person. You can take over any conversation in one tap, from your phone, and the AI steps back until you hand the chat back to it.

Illustrative chat. The customer is fictional.

3. Knowing when to stop

For a clinic, that means scheduling and admin questions only, never diagnosis. Good guardrails are as much about what the agent refuses to do as what it does.

  • Write down what the AI should never answer, and when it should hand over.
  • Set a spend cap per conversation, so the AI pauses and alerts your team at the limit.
  • Test the agent on real customer questions before it talks to real customers.
Trust isn’t a feature you add at the end. It’s the shape of the whole system.

Get these three right and customer-facing AI stops being a risk you tolerate and becomes a teammate you rely on. Read how GenuDo approaches security.
